[ Alnarp Park ] (swedish)

A visit to the park is an experience, whatever the season.
The park offers room for reflection and recreation, as well as a source of inspiration. It is lush and green in summer, and a glorious display of colour in the autumn, with an abundance of fruits and berries. In winter, the trees and shrubs show their beautiful forms to advantage, especially when accentuated by frost and snow.

History

The major part of the park has probably been forested for over 10 000 years! The park was designed and laid out during the years 1859-80, in the romantic landscape park tradi-tion with undulating lawns and winding paths.

Today it boasts a fine arboretum which, in terms of num-ber of species and varieties of trees and shrubs, is the second largest in Sweden.

One of the largest collections of plants in Sweden

Exotic plants have been collected for the park ever since it was first laid out. Alnarp specialises in the ligneous (woody) species and has a collection which includes over 2000 diffe-rent species. A new section for conifers was laid out in 1975-78.

The young trees are tended meticulously to secure healthy and attractive stands for the future. The wide range of plants is of great educational value and a delight to students and visitors alike. Almost every tree, shrub or plant is labelled with its name in Latin and Swedish.

The Assortment Garden

The Assortment Garden, situated in the park, provides a wealth of ideas for any gardener. On one side, the most comprehensive collection of annual flowers and plants in Sweden is laid out each year. On the other side is a wide range of perennial plants and ornamental grasses.

Experimental Fields

Researchers at Alnarp collect seeds and cuttings from all over the world for experimental cultivation. Years of study are then devoted to assessing the plantsŐ performance, for example, how they adapt to the Swedish climate.

The experimental fields host many newcomers, ornamen-tal as well as otherwise potentially useful species, waiting to be introduced in Swedish home and market gardens.

The range of fruits and berries includes apples, cherries, pears, plums, strawberries, raspberries, gooseberries and red, white and black currants.

SLU Alnarp

Alnarp, a green island in a sea of fields, lies between Lund and Malmö, in the municipality of Lomma.

The Alnarp Park is used primarily for educational purposes, by garden and landscape-related university programme students and professionals. The occasional visitors, as indeed the many "regulars" from the surrounding towns, find the park just as suitable for botanical browsing as for recreation.

SLU Alnarp is a university campus, part of the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU). Master of Science Programmes are offered in Horticulture and Landscape Architecture, and University Diploma Programmes are offered in Agricultural and Rural Management, Horticultural Management, and Landscape Construction and Management.

Furthermore, extensive research is carried out in the fields of Agricultural Production and Engineering, Landscape Planning, Forestry, Horticulture and Plant Protection.

SLU Alnarp staff and faculty members number about 350, and there are about 700 students.
